What Information We Collect
The types of information that we collect fall under two general categories: personally identifiable information (“PII”) and non-personally identifiable information (“non-PII”). PII consists of any information which can be used to specifically identify you as an individual, whereas non-PII consists of aggregate information or any information that does not reveal your identity. The following sections describe how your PII and non-PII are collected by us, and how we use such information.
How We Collect and Use Information
When you register with us to use the Services, you may be required to provide us with identifying information such as your name, address, email address, and additional information relating to your education, practice and specialty.
We use your email address for promotional (e.g., newsletters, new product offerings, event notifications, special third-party offers) purposes. Email messages we send you may contain code that enables our database to track your usage of the emails, including whether the email was opened and what links (if any) were clicked. If you would rather not receive promotional emails from us, please see the section below labeled “Choice/Opt-Out”. We reserve the right to send you certain communications, such as service announcements and administrative messages, without offering you the opportunity to opt out of receiving them.
We track usage of the Services on our servers through log files. We may use this information in order to administer the Services, prevent fraud, track visitor movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information that is non-PII (such as your IP addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and number of clicks).
We store the information we collect through log files, and cookies in a profile containing each user’s viewing preferences. We use this information in order to identify your interests and improve the content provided by the Services.
We may periodically conduct voluntary member surveys. We encourage our members to participate in such surveys because they provide us with important information regarding the improvement of the Services. You may also volunteer for certain surveys that we may offer to our users, and any additional rules regarding the conduct of such surveys will be disclosed to you prior to your participation. We might share demographic information with a partner or advertiser, but we will not link the survey responses to any PII, and all responses will be anonymous.
We may provide a referral service to enable you to tell a friend about our Services, in which case we will ask you for your friend’s name and email address and then send your friend a one-time email inviting him or her to try our Services. We will store that information for the sole purpose of sending that one-time email and tracking the success of the referral service.
If any of the information you provide is considered “Protected Health Information,” as defined under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (as updated and revised from time to time), we will keep this information for six (6) years, or longer if changes in the law require additional time. For all other information, we will retain for a period of three (3) years. You may contact us at email@example.com to request that this information be destroyed/deleted prior to these retention periods (if allowed under HIPAA or any other federal or state regulation).
Disclosure of Your Information to Third Parties
We may disclose information you provide (including your PII) if required to do so by law, at the request of a third party, or if we, in our sole discretion, believe that disclosure is (1) permitted or required by the law, requests or orders from law enforcement, or any legal process (whether or not such disclosure is required by applicable law); or (2) is reasonable to protect or defend the rights or property of us or a third party.
We may share your non-PII with third parties, but not in a manner that would reveal your identity. We may share your PII, sometimes in conjunction with your non-PII, with service providers that may be associated with us to perform functions on our behalf. For example, outsourced customer support agents or technology infrastructure providers may need access to your information to perform services for you on our behalf (such as processing payments you make to us). Your information will be treated as private and confidential by such service providers and not used for any other purpose than we authorize. In addition, from time to time, we may share PII (such as email or mailing addresses) about our user base with carefully selected third parties, so they can offer goods and services that we believe may be of interest to our users. If you do not wish to receive offers from our trusted partners, you can change your email preferences at any time by following the steps outlined in the “Choice/Opt-Out” section below.
As we develop our business, we may buy or sell assets and, depending on the transaction, your PII may be one of the transferred assets. In the event that we are acquired by another company, your PII may be part of the assets transferred to the acquiring party. If this occurs, you will be notified if there are any material changes to the way your PII is collected or used.
We do not sell or lease your personal information to unaffiliated third parties. From time to time we may share your information with affiliated companies whose products we feel may be of interest to you.
We may use third-party advertising companies to serve ads when you visit our Website. These companies may use non personal information (not your name, address, email address or telephone number) about your visits to this and other Web sites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services of interest to you.
We do not target our Services to children under the age of 13, and in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, any information we may receive from users we believe to be under the age of 13 will be purged from our database.
We will exercise reasonable care in providing secure transmission of information between your computer and our servers, but given that no information transmitted over the Internet can be guaranteed 100% secure, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information transmitted to us over the Internet and hence accept no liability for any unintentional disclosure.
Links to Other Sites
The Services may contain links to third party websites. However, we do not control or take any responsibility for the privacy practices of, or information collected by, any third parties, including any affiliated or co-branded websites which link to the Services or advertise on the Services.
You may use the following options for removing your information from our email database if you wish to opt out of receiving promotional emails and newsletters:
- click on the “unsubscribe” link on the bottom of the email; or
- click on the “Account Settings” link from the site home page, and un-check the undesired promotions.
California Residents’ Privacy Rights
Under California law, California residents may opt-out of our disclosing personal information about them to third parties for their marketing purposes. If you do not want us to disclose information to other companies for their marketing purposes, please contact us by any of the ways described in the “Contact Information” section below. Pursuant to Section 1798.83 of the California Civil Code, residents of California have the right to request from a business, with whom the California resident has an established business relationship, certain information with respect to the types of personal information the business shares with third parties for direct marketing purposes by such third party and the identities of the third parties with whom the business has shared such information during the immediately preceding calendar year. To request a copy of such information, please contact us by any of the ways described in the “Contact Information” section below, and we will respond within 30 days as required by law. California law also requires us to disclose how we respond to your Web browser “do not track” signals or other mechanisms that provide you the ability to exercise choice regarding the collection of personally identifiable information about your online activities over time and across third-party Web sites or online services. We are also required to disclose whether other parties may collect personally identifiable information about your online activities over time and across different Web sites when you use the Site. Currently, the Site does not take any automated action in response to “do not track” signals or other browser mechanisms, and no other third parties collect personally identifiable information about your online activities when you use the Site.
Updating Your Information
You may change your password and other information from the “Account Settings” page accessible via a link from the home page on our website. To the extent you choose to include PII or other information in your profile, the Services allow you to update or remove that information by editing or deleting the content.
